Our Technology

VoIP-PAL holds 40 U.S. and international patents in communication technology. Three of these patents are at the center of our current lawsuits: US Patent 8,630,234, US Patent 8,542,815 and US Patent 10,218,606. These patents cover crucial processes for making and routing calls, texts, and data between cellular and Wi-Fi networks. They also address how communications are efficiently transferred between these networks, ensuring smooth connectivity across a single carrier’s infrastructure and between multiple carriers. VoIP-PAL developed many of the innovations that modern IP communications are based on.

Why Is Our Mission Important

Every day, we connect with the digital and real world through our smartphones. These connections enable us to access government services, make purchases, transfer funds, book travel, stay in touch with loved ones, and much more. Given our reliance on this vital technology, it should be regarded as an essential service. However, access is often limited by the high costs associated with the current market structure, leaving many at a significant economic and social disadvantage. Making this access more affordable could help create a fairer, more inclusive playing field for all.

Our Challenge

As a pioneer in advanced telecommunications technology, VoIP-PAL took the proactive step of initiating litigation to protect our innovations and promote fair market access. In response, some dominant players in the telecommunications and technology industry have leveraged extensive resources to challenge certain aspects of our patents through ongoing litigation. Despite these efforts, we have successfully defended the validity of our patents in 36 separate cases—a testament to the strength and resilience of our technology. While challenges persist, VoIP-PAL remains dedicated to fostering a more competitive and inclusive marketplace.

Our Response

VoIP-PAL has strengthened its commitment to consumers and shareholders by initiating a class action lawsuit on behalf of over 373 million cell phone subscribers. This lawsuit seeks to end what we believe are anti-competitive tying practices used by three major U.S. telecom companies to control the market, while empowering consumers to access stand-alone Wi-Fi services directly from their smartphones.
